What is a Picosecond Laser?

A picosecond laser (also known as a pico laser or picolaser) is an advanced type of laser that delivers energy in ultrashort pulses of just one trillionth of a second. This makes it fundamentally different — and more effective — than the traditional nd:YAG lasers that until recently were the industry standard.

Photomechanical Effect

Due to the extremely short pulse duration, a pico laser works primarily through a photomechanical (photoacoustic) effect rather than heat. The energy is released so quickly that pigment particles literally explode without the surrounding tissue suffering any thermal damage.

Finer Fragmentation

Pigment granules are broken down into much smaller particles than with an nd:YAG laser. The body can eliminate these microparticles faster and more completely via the lymphatic system, making results visible in significantly fewer treatments.

Minimal Recovery Time

Because heat damage is minimal, redness and swelling after treatment are limited. Most clients experience only a few hours or days of mild side effects, making the pico laser ideal for busy professionals.

Collagen & Skin Rejuvenation

The photomechanical shockwave stimulates fibroblasts in the dermis, leading to increased collagen production and skin remodeling. This makes the picosecond laser exceptionally suitable for skin rejuvenation, acne scars and pore reduction.

Applications of the Picosecond Laser

The pico laser is one of the most versatile skin treatment devices in the professional salon. From tattoo removal to skin rejuvenation — one device, countless indications.

Tattoo Removal

Removal of black, red, blue, brown and other tattoo colors in fewer sessions than with an nd:YAG laser, including stubborn or colored inks.

Pigment Spots

Effective treatment of age spots, sun spots, chloasma, melasma, freckles and café-au-lait spots on the face and body.

Skin Rejuvenation

Reduction of fine lines, dull skin, rough texture and large pores thanks to stimulated collagen production deep in the dermis.

Acne Scars

Treatment of deeper acne scars and post-inflammatory skin discoloration through targeted tissue stimulation and the photomechanical effect.

Carbon Peel (Hollywood)

The popular “Hollywood Peel” — a carbon laser treatment for deep cleansing, pore reduction and a radiant complexion immediately after treatment.

Eyebrow & PMU Removal

Precise removal of permanent makeup and microblading in sensitive areas such as eyebrows and lip liner, with maximum control.

How Does a Picosecond Treatment Work?

Whether it’s tattoo removal, pigment treatment or the popular carbon peel — a pico laser treatment follows clear steps.

Step 1: Consultation & skin analysis
The practitioner determines the skin type (Fitzpatrick scale), the nature of the pigment or tattoo, and establishes the optimal treatment parameters. For tattoos, ink colors and depth are also taken into account.

Step 2: Skin preparation
The skin is cleansed and, depending on the treatment area, may be provided with a topical anesthetic cream. Protective eyewear is mandatory for both the practitioner and the client.

Step 3: Laser treatment
The picosecond laser is moved over the treatment area. Ultrashort pulses shatter the pigment via the photomechanical effect. The client experiences a light “snapping” sensation, generally considerably more comfortable than nd:YAG lasers.

Step 4: Immediate aftercare
After the treatment, the area is cooled and provided with a soothing cream. The client receives home care instructions for the next 24–72 hours (avoid sun exposure, keep skin protected).

Step 5: Follow-up treatments
Depending on the indication, follow-up appointments are scheduled with an interval of 4 to 8 weeks. Thanks to the fine fragmentation of pigment, pico lasers generally require fewer sessions compared to traditional systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a picosecond laser and an nd:YAG laser?

A picosecond laser works with pulses that are a thousand times shorter than an nd:YAG laser. This creates a photomechanical rather than a photothermal effect, resulting in finer pigment fragmentation, shorter recovery time and minimal risk of thermal damage. Fewer sessions are therefore needed for most indications.

How many sessions are needed for tattoo removal with a pico laser?

The number of sessions depends on factors such as the size, age, location and colors of the tattoo, the skin type and the depth of the ink. On average, 4 to 10 sessions are needed, with a minimum interval of 6 to 8 weeks. Pico lasers achieve this result generally in fewer sessions than traditional nd:YAG systems.

Is a picosecond laser safe for dark skin types?

Yes. Thanks to the photomechanical mechanism of action and minimal heat development, picosecond lasers are safer for darker skin types (Fitzpatrick IV to VI) than nd:YAG lasers. The PicoSecond Platina has been specifically certified for dark skin types and sensitive areas.

Can I offer carbon peel treatments with a single picosecond laser?

Absolutely. The PicoSecond Platina is suitable for the carbon laser peel (also known as Hollywood Peel or Black Doll Peel). A thin layer of carbon powder is applied to the skin, which is then removed layer by layer with the 1064 nm wavelength. The result is a deeply cleansed, radiant complexion.

Is training offered when purchasing a pico laser?

Yes. Every picosecond laser from Beauty Business Holland includes comprehensive hands-on training, carried out by certified trainers. The training covers theory on laser operation and safety, practical exercises on the equipment and guidance during the first treatments. Additional refresher training is available on request.

Buying a Picosecond Laser

Purchasing a professional picosecond laser is an important investment for any beauty salon, clinic or laser practice. The technology offers significant advantages over older laser systems and enables practitioners to serve a wider target audience with faster, safer and more effective results.

Pico laser for tattoo removal

Tattoo removal is one of the most in-demand laser treatments at the moment. Clients are looking for fast, safe and permanent removal of their tattoos — and the pico laser delivers exactly that. Thanks to the ultrashort pulse duration, tattoo ink is shattered into microscopically small particles that the body can efficiently eliminate via the lymphatic system. This results in noticeably faster fading of tattoos, even for colors that are traditionally difficult to treat such as blue, green and red.

Pigment treatment with picosecond laser

In addition to tattoo removal, the picosecond laser is one of the most effective solutions for stubborn pigmentation problems such as melasma, chloasma, age spots and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The precise targeting of melanin, combined with minimal thermal damage, also makes the system safe to use for clients with a darker skin tone.

Skin rejuvenation and collagen stimulation

Modern use of the pico laser goes beyond simple pigment treatment. By using fractional handpieces or specific treatment modes, the laser stimulates the production of collagen and elastin in the dermis. This visibly improves fine lines, acne scars and skin texture — without a long recovery period.
